The Purpose of Easter as a Holiday

Easter, like many of our Christian Holy days, was created for evangelism. As Christianity invaded pagan cultures, the Church began to offer a Christian perspective on national and religious pagan holidays. Easter was dedicated to the concept of new life in Christ, the risen Lord. It was celebrated at the same time as the ancient pagan celebration of the spring equinox, usually connected to the goddess of Eostre regarding new spring crops and fertility. Thus, eggs and rabbits were often symbols. Christians painted eggs and put crosses on them. The Easter bunny was introduced in the 1700's by some Germanic immigrants. The point was to lift up Christ at a time when others were celebrating false gods and goddesses. We continue that tradition of evangelistic outreach. Some only attend church at Christmas and Easter. It is an opportunity to remind people what these days are all about... that salvation and new life is found only in Christ Jesus. Let us pray that we too will reach some of our neighbors this weekend with the truth about Easter.
